LifeStyles of the Grown Sexy & Sober is proud of the contribution of all its vendors, featured guest, local talent, and all the women of the community; as a whole who had taken the time to be a part of the Queen for a Day Workshop Event! The overwhelming success of the "Queen for a Day Workshop Event," has allowed us to make a conscious decision of making this a yearly event.
A few things that were learned from this event, it does not matter about the color of a women's skin, or the shape and size of her body, it is the respect she has for herself and the dedication or motivation that she has for her dreams. Now, as for myself, I was a part of this experience, a tremendous amount of energy from the women who attended was bouncing off the walls in the room and the moment was exciting, personal stories of past and present decisions was shared openly. There were no bragging rights, but, but the rights of passage to womanhood which let other women know that as long as you have breath within you, "WE" will overcome any obstacle.
I would like to give thanks to the following

We are here to challenge those that believe the women in our society can be defined by one type of music, one type of book, one type of thought, and one type of future. We ARE multi-faceted, creative, professionals, ambitious, and unable to be stopped!
We are not a force to be feared but energy to be utilized,

My Journey from Puerto Rico, to Allentown, was very difficult. First of all, we (my husband and I) had no money. So we decided to sell everything. Next, we were out of food, Then, low and behold we get the news that one of our friends has been shot three times. When we heard the news, we were very, very, sad. We couldn’t believe it we were actually in shock… then the days were going by slowly, and our time was running short. We needed to catch that plane. We got the money, we were on our way to Pennsylvania, and we were nervous at the airport. My husband was very nervous, and he did not really want to come. But I told him ”Papi, the island is too dangerous for us to live anymore and the last thing we need is for you to get shot too!” And that was it. We didn’t discuss it anymore; we just got on the plane and continued our journey to the Great Pennsylvania! Now it is June 7th, and we are here. We have no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We thought we were going to the land of “milk and honey”, but we were really walking into our all time low factor. We were homeless, we had NO jobs, and we were staying with my mother and uncle.
A month has passed and at first everything seemed great, then slowly the pestilence was setting in… too many rules, and us being a bother for my mother and uncle was really starting to get to them. I hate to be a bother so we all (i.e. my mother, my husband, and I) we moved to a new apartment. It was a two bedroom, and we had all of our things unpacked. We were excited again and low and behold, my mother was already starting to talk s--t. “Oh, you guys don’t respect me, and you are stealing from me!” She said. I had already heard all of this before so I was just getting ready for the turmoil to spill over. Then, one of her perfumes went missing, and she had claimed that it was my husband who had stolen it. And I told her “No!” “It wasn’t Carlos who stole it, you probably misplaced it.” So then she started to make more accusations and I was getting tired of the same bullshit all over again. So I told my husband it’s time to leave. Next, out of a fit of rage, she had packed all of her things, and told us that she was leaving. So the landlord gave my husband and I a week to leave the apartment, but the problem was, we didn’t have anywhere to go. So we stayed. Then, the solemn knock on the door. It was the landlord, he wanted us out, and we were so sad! So we packed all of our things and put them in the basement, until we found a place to stay. We kept working until we found an emergency place (that still is our residence today), a run-down, walls falling apart, piece of s--t hotel room. But who was I to complain? After all, we didn’t really have a choice. So, we are still in this place today, and we are still trying to find jobs, and make ends meet. I wish I could tell you that we are both working in excellent jobs, and that we are both making a lot of money… I wish I could tell you that, but I would be lying. We are still jobless, and poor, and trying to make ends meet. We are still in a rundown hotel room, and we are still getting to our wits end. But then, I met a man named Ben, who offered me a job as a secretary, it is by commission, but at this rate I can’t really complain. We are two weeks behind on our rent, and my husband has an interview for Nestle, I don’t know how things will workout for us in the future, but all I know is, is that for now… I’m still keeping my hopes up.

On Christmas Eve, as I was reminiscing about past events I had orchestrated in 2008, (please see EVENTS at www.projectreal.piczo.com), I experienced a warm feeling of thankfulness and appreciation for all of the people I have met and encountered. I was fortunate enough to have cultivated old and new relationships and am forever grateful for doing so.
Meanwhile, on my television, as one of my favorite movies, "It's A Wonderful Life" was ending, I, for the first time, actually understood the last scene that had Harry Bailey offering a salutation amidst a room full of people who had just given their money to save the town's Savings and Loan bank; and he stated, " A toast to my big brother George. The richest man in town." And as tears suddenly appeared and rolled down my cheeks, I truly understood that I shared the same wealth.....
